John Beebe came to me to design a series of posters for an upcoming photography show of his photos from Sri Lanka. He is a Maine native, a high school teacher, and a professional globetrotting photographer. He wanted something to simply and effectively advertise his photography and his show all in one poster. I was provided with the text, details, and a few high-resolution photographs of his. I was to come up with a series of posters that shared a visual language.

The result was two posters that both prominently displayed an exemplary photograph from the exhibition and displayed the details of the event. Hierarchy of information, always important in poster design, was a main concern of these posters and was a struggle to render in a visually pleasing way with the wealth of information to be included on the poster.

The colors in the text on each poster mirror some of the colors of each image to make the posters more coherent. The type is set on black along with the image to help emphasize contrast in the image. On the poster, the dates of the shows and the contact information for John Beebe were the most important pieces of information so they are emphasized with conventions of type.

Once color adjusted and printed, the posters were hung in local businesses as well as common hangouts of the art lover. Being a teacher, some were also displayed in the classroom and around the school. The two posters, 11X17 horizontal and vertical respectively, didn’t take up much space, say in a shop window. They did grab attention through thier bold colors, high contrast and of course the fantastic photography.
